Kitchens built to last

Kitchen Remodeling Contractors in Missoula, Montana

From opening up a closed-off 1950s kitchen to a full gut with new layout, cabinets, tile and lighting, our carpenters handle the structure and the finish work themselves, so the schedule holds and the details line up.

The kitchens in Missoula's older neighborhoods were built for a different kind of family. A 1948 house in Lewis and Clark has a galley kitchen closed off from the dining room, a single 15-amp circuit and cabinets that stop a foot short of the ceiling. Constructive Brothers remodels those kitchens as a carpentry job first. We take out the wall between kitchen and dining room with a properly sized beam, correct the floor where the old linoleum sat on three layers of subfloor, and frame new openings and soffits so cabinets hang on solid backing. Then our own crew installs the cabinets, tile, trim and flooring while a licensed electrician brings the circuits up to current code.

Materials get chosen for how a Missoula kitchen actually gets used. Quartz counters hold up to the sandy grit that comes in off the trails, LVP or porcelain tile floors survive wet boots better than site-finished hardwood, and a vented range hood matters more here than in most towns because windows stay shut through smoke season and January alike. We work with local cabinet shops as well as semi-custom lines, and we will tell you where the money is best spent: usually on layout and cabinet quality, rarely on the fancy faucet. Every kitchen gets a fixed-scope quote with allowances spelled out, a written schedule and the same crew from demo day to the last piece of shoe molding.

A mid-range kitchen remodel in Missoula runs $45,000 to $90,000, and a full gut with layout changes, custom cabinets and a removed bearing wall runs $90,000 to $160,000, with cabinet grade and structural work being the two biggest variables.

Why Us

Why Missoula Homeowners Choose Us for Kitchen Remodels

Layout changes without the guesswork

Opening a wall between the kitchen and living room is where most kitchen remodels go wrong. We identify bearing walls before quoting, size the beam with an engineer, and carry the load to the foundation so the ceiling never sags.

Cabinets hung on straight walls

Cabinet runs only look right when the wall behind them is flat and the floor under them is level. We shim, plane or refloat the walls before install, set the base cabinets to a laser line, and scribe the fillers so the 3-inch gap at the end of the run never happens.

Electrical brought to code

Old Missoula kitchens rarely have the two 20-amp small-appliance circuits, GFCI protection and dedicated range and dishwasher circuits the code now requires. We coordinate the electrician during rough-in so the panel work is done once and the inspection passes without a return trip.

Tile and flooring by the same hands

Our crew sets the backsplash and lays the floor, so the tile lines run true to the cabinets and the flooring transitions are planned rather than patched. Nobody waits a week for a tile sub to fit you in.

Our Process

How a Kitchen Remodels Project Runs

Measure and plan

We measure the room, check what the walls are carrying, and talk through how you cook and where the family lands at dinner. From that we sketch two or three layouts with honest pros and cons.

Selections and fixed-scope quote

You pick cabinets, counters, tile and fixtures with our help, and we lock them into a written quote with allowances. Cabinets get ordered early because lead times in western Montana run six to ten weeks.

Demo, framing and rough-in

We set up a temporary kitchen for you, strip the old room, handle any structural changes, and get electrical and plumbing roughed in and inspected before the walls close.

Cabinets, counters, tile and trim

Cabinets go in, counters get templated and installed, then backsplash, flooring, trim and lighting finish the room. We do the final inspection and walk-through and leave you cooking in it.

FAQs

Kitchen Remodels Questions, Answered

How long does a kitchen remodel take in Missoula?
Plan on four to eight weeks on site for a full remodel once cabinets are in hand, and add six to ten weeks before that for cabinet lead times and permit review. A cosmetic refresh with new counters, backsplash and paint can be done in one to two weeks. We give you a written schedule with the quote, and because our own crew does the carpentry, tile and flooring, the dates do not drift waiting on subcontractors.
Can you open up my kitchen to the living room?
In most Missoula houses, yes. Ranches from the 1950s through the 1970s usually have a bearing wall down the middle, and the kitchen wall is often part of it. We confirm what it carries, have an engineer size an LVL or steel beam, and install it either flush in the ceiling or dropped below it depending on the joist direction and your budget. Flush beams cost more but leave a flat ceiling.
Custom, semi-custom or stock cabinets?
Stock cabinets from a big-box store are the cheapest and come in fixed sizes, which means more fillers in an old house with odd dimensions. Semi-custom lines offer more sizes and better boxes for a moderate step up and suit most Missoula remodels. Custom cabinets from a local shop cost the most and make sense when the room is irregular or you want a specific wood. We install all three and will price the options side by side.
Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen?
If you are moving walls, adding or relocating circuits, moving plumbing or changing a window, yes. Swapping cabinets and counters in the same footprint with no wiring changes usually does not need one. Most real kitchen remodels involve at least new circuits, so a permit and an electrical inspection are typical. We handle the application with the City of Missoula or Missoula County and schedule the inspections around the work.
