Clinton is a scatter of homes along I-90 and the Clark Fork about twenty-five minutes east of Missoula, with Rock Creek coming in from the south and the old railroad grade running through the middle of it. There is no downtown, and there never really was one. What Clinton has is acreage: a mix of owner-built houses from the 1970s and 1980s and stick-built places from the last twenty years, with manufactured homes scattered between them, almost all on wells and septic. The work here is heavy on framing, whether that is a new shop or an addition that doubles the size of a small house. Cabins up Rock Creek that need to become year-round homes are the other regular call.
Rock Creek is a blue-ribbon trout stream, and the cabins along Rock Creek Road were built for summer. Turning one into a real house starts with a foundation below the 42-inch frost line and a roof that carries the heavier snow that settles in that canyon. Insulation is the other big line item, since the original builder never planned on January. Down on the Clark Fork flats near Turah and Schwartz Creek the soil is river gravel and sand, easy to dig and quick to drain, but the water table comes up in June. Wildfire is a constant up every side drainage out here, so we build exteriors with fiber cement or metal siding and decks that do not trap debris underneath.

Summer cabins along Rock Creek were set on piers or shallow pads and were never meant to hold heat. Converting one means a real foundation and a roof rebuilt for canyon snow, with walls thick enough to insulate. The road is slow, so we stage material once and stay until the shell is closed.
