Seeley Lake is a full hour from our Missoula shop up Highway 83, so we book it in multi-day stretches with one consolidated material delivery rather than day trips.
Seeley Lake is an hour northeast of Missoula up Highway 83, at the bottom of the Seeley-Swan Valley with the Mission Mountains on one side and the Swan Range on the other. It is a lake town and a timber town. Cabins ring Seeley Lake itself and the chain of lakes up the Clearwater, many of them built in the 1950s through 1970s as summer places and now being asked to work as full-time homes. The sawmill that anchored the town shut down in 2024, and the housing that grew up around it is modest and practical. We come up here for framing and for the kind of full renovation that turns a three-season cabin into a house that can take a Seeley winter.
Nothing about building here is the same as Missoula. Ground snow loads in Seeley Lake run far above what the valley sees, so a roof or deck designed for a Missoula house will not pass here, and we engineer for the real number. Frost goes deep and the season is short: footings often cannot go in before May, and exterior work needs to be closed up by early October. Wildfire is not a hypothetical either. The Rice Ridge fire in 2017 came to the edge of town, and since then defensible space and ignition-resistant siding have become the first conversation on every exterior job we do here. We build with metal roofing, fiber cement or metal siding, screened vents and decks that shed embers.
An hour each way means we do not run Seeley Lake as a day trip. We book the crew for stretches of several days and bring everything in on a single delivery, so nobody loses a morning driving back for a box of screws. That approach works for framing and full cabin renovations, and it is why we ask for a bit more lead time here than in the valley. Cabins on Seeley Lake and the lakes up the Clearwater were built light and close to the water. Converting one to year-round use means a foundation that handles frost and a roof rebuilt for the snow. The septic gets a look too, since systems near the lake face close scrutiny. We start every one with the structure before any finishes.
Roofs in Seeley Lake carry snow that would collapse a valley roof, and decks catch what slides off. We design trusses and deck framing for the local load, and we keep deck rails and posts clear of the slide path off a metal roof. A deck built under an eave without a snow plan will not last two winters.
Since 2017, most Seeley Lake owners want the exterior built for embers. That starts with siding and roofing that will not ignite and a deck that does not collect needles underneath. Vents get screened, and we pair the work with defensible-space advice around the house so it actually changes the outcome and the insurer notices.
