Carpentry, Decks and Renovation in Missoula, Montana

Our shop is in Missoula, so most city jobs are under fifteen minutes away, which lets us start early and stage material overnight without paying for travel time.

Constructive Brothers works out of Missoula, so most of our jobs are inside the city limits or a few minutes past them. We know the housing stock street by street: the 1910s craftsman bungalows of the University District and the Slant Streets, the railroad-era worker houses on the Northside and Westside, the post-war ranches in Lewis and Clark and Farviews, and the 1970s split-levels climbing the South Hills. Each era has its own habits. Old plaster tends to hide knob-and-tube wiring, and split-levels rarely have a proper header where you want to open a wall. Our carpenters have been inside enough of these houses to price the surprises before demo starts.

Missoula's newer zoning code allows accessory dwelling units up to 1,000 square feet, and that has changed the math for a lot of families in Target Range, Orchard Homes, the Rattlesnake and the Northside. A detached ADU over a new garage, or a basement conversion with its own entrance, turns a big lot into rental income or a place for parents to land. We frame and finish those projects and coordinate the trades as one crew, which matters when the city inspector shows up for the fourth time and wants the same answers he got on the first visit. Kitchens and bathrooms in older homes are the other steady work, usually paired with the structural fixes those houses need anyway.

Winter shapes the schedule here. Footings go 42 inches deep because of frost, and exterior work stacks up between May and October. We book interior remodels for the cold months so the crew stays busy and your project does not wait behind a summer deck backlog. Quotes are fixed-scope and written in plain language, so you know what is included and what happens if we open a wall and find rot. Call (406) 207-2524 or send photos and we will come look.

Building in Missoula: What We Plan For

University District and Slant Streets

These 1905 to 1930 bungalows have balloon framing and full-dimension lumber that does not match anything at the yard. We keep the original trim profiles and mill replacements to match, and we add fire blocking whenever walls come open. Exterior changes in the historic district may need city review, so we build that time into the schedule.

South Hills and Farviews split-levels

The 1970s houses on the hill were built fast for a growing town. Common jobs are opening the wall between the kitchen and the sunken living room, and re-siding the weather side that takes the wind off Pattee Canyon. Hollow-core doors and trim get replaced while we are there, and most have room for a deck off the upper level.

Target Range, Orchard Homes and Miller Creek

West and south of town the lots get bigger and the rules change. Parts of Target Range and Orchard Homes still run on wells and septic, so an addition or ADU starts with a septic capacity check. Miller Creek subdivisions from the 1990s and 2000s are now due for deck rebuilds and kitchen updates.

FAQs

Missoula Questions

Can you build an ADU on my Missoula lot?
Probably, if the lot is zoned residential. Missoula's updated code allows accessory dwelling units up to 1,000 square feet, attached or detached, and we have built both. The first step is a site visit to check setbacks and whether your sewer lateral can take a second unit. We handle the permit set and everything from framing through finish, and we tell you up front if the lot does not pencil.
Do you work on Missoula's historic homes?
Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. Houses in the University District and on the Northside were built with old-growth lumber and details worth keeping. We restore original windows and porches where they can be saved and match trim profiles when they cannot. Behind the finishes, the structure gets brought up to current code. When a house sits inside a local historic district we handle the review paperwork before any exterior work starts.
When should I book a deck in Missoula?
Call in late winter. Deck footings need 42 inches of depth to get below frost, which means we cannot dig until the ground lets go, usually April. By then the summer calendar is filling up. If you reach out in January or February we can walk the site and hold a spring slot with a fixed-scope quote in hand. Composite or cedar, we build to the current deck code so the inspection passes without a return trip.
